(Easton, MD 5/1/2012) Although more than 5 million children in the United States have a speech, language, and hearing disorder, parents are often uninformed and unsure about what to do when they suspect their child. This May, and every May since 1927, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) has used the May is Better Hearing and Speech Month (BHSM) celebration to provide parents with information about communication disorders to help ensure that they do not seriously affect their children’s ability to learn, socialize with others, and be successful in school.

Speech and language problems can occur at any time in a child’s life. They can be caused by accidental injury, illness, or inherited by birth. Child speech and language problems include:

Stuttering

Articulation problems (“wabbit” instead of “rabbit”)

Language disorders such as the slow development of vocabulary, concepts, and grammar.

Voice disorders (nasal, breathy, or hoarse voice and speech that is too high or low)

Parents who suspect their child has a communication disorder should see an ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist. These professionals identify, assess, and treat speech and language problems including swallowing disorders. Speech-language pathologists work in schools, private practice, hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, health departments, research laboratories, and other health education settings.

“Fortunately, most children with speech, language, and hearing problems can be helped,” according to Kelly Bonnette, SLP. “Even if the problem cannot be eliminated, we can teach the child strategies to help them cope with their communication disorders, or provide them with the appropriate technology. By promoting Better Hearing and Speech Month, we hope parents will learn about communication disorders, what they can do to help their children, and how speech-language pathologists and audiologists can help with their child’s communication disorders.”

Meanwhile, hearing loss, like speech and language problems, can have a negative impact on a child’s social and academic development. Communication disorders like hearing loss in children can occur at birth or as a child grows older due to chronic ear infections or exposure to noise. The earlier hearing loss occurs in a child’s life, the more serious the effects have on the child’s development.

Typical signs of a hearing loss in children include:

Inconsistently responding to sound

Delayed language and speech development

Unclear speech

Sound is turned up on electronic equipment (radio, TV, cd player, etc.)

Does not follow directions

Often says “Huh?”

Does not respond when called

Frequently misunderstands what is said and wants things repeated

As a first step, people who think their child is displaying many of these warning signs and think they may have hearing loss or other hearing disorders should see a certified audiologist. These professionals specialize in preventing, identifying, assessing, and treating hearing disorders. Also, they provide treatment for hearing loss including fitting hearing aids and other assistive listening devices, and they can teach children with hearing loss how to concentrate on hearing all sounds.

ASHA recommends that children at risk for hearing loss, such as those who suffer from chronic ear infections or in cases where there is a family history of hearing loss, be screened by a certified audiologist as frequently as needed to ensure they are hearing well. Otherwise, for children ages 5-18, hearing screenings should occur on initial entry into school and annually in kindergarten through 3rd grade as well as in the 7th and 11th grades.

Parents who think their children may have a speech, language, or hearing disorder or k<var></var>now of a loved one who has a communication disorder should contact a professional. Speech Works is a small private practice in downtown Easton that has been owned and operated by Kelly Bonnette, MA, CCC/SLP for the past eight years. With 16 years of experience ranging from pediatric to geriatric, Ms. Bonnette has been successful in helping clients of all ages with their communication difficulties. Call 410-829-5836 today to find out how she can help YOUR child reach their full potential!

**

ASHA is the national professional, scientific, and credentialing association for more than 145,000 audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and speech, language, and hearing scientists. Audiologists specialize in preventing and assessing hearing and balance disorders as well as providing audiologic treatment including hearing aids. Speech-language pathologists identify, assess, and treat speech and language problems including swallowing disorders. www.asha.org**

So you want to go diss on someone that you don’t like?

Well I’m telling you it hurts them and it’s not right.

Put yourself in their shoes and understand their plight.

It’s circling around and around their head every day and night.

You’re ruining their lives stop making up excuses.

For all the pain you’re causing, those marks and bruises.

It’s really a shame that you’re playing this cruel game.

The pain you’re inflicting when you’re shouting out mean names.

Think about your actions before you give their feelings another shove.

The Unique Needs of Biracial and Multiethnic Youth

Tuesday, May 15

8:45 AM – 4:00 PM

The Presbyterian Church of Easton

617 N. Washington St.

Easton, MD 21601

Increasingly, families in our region are blended across races and ethnicities. Whether within a biological family, a foster family, or an adoptive family, both parent and family caregivers as well as youth are recognizing the need to communicate respectfully and effectively with one another about cross-cultural issues of importance to them. What celebrations marking transitions in a young person’s life are important to celebrate? Are there issues of personal hygiene and appearance, such as hairstyle and clothing, that need to be honestly discussed, understood, and respected? Where can we turn on the Eastern Shore to help us answer our cultural questions as they arise?

Join Ivonn Ellis-Wiggan, JD, Psy. D, from the National Federation of Families for Children’s Mental Health and the Technical Assistance Partnership for Child and Family Mental Health, as she leads a local panel of parents, foster parents, and youth from across our Eastern Shore region in a discussion of the unique needs of biracial and multiethnic youth and those who care for them. As a biracial individual, Dr. Ellis-Wiggan, shares the lived experience with other biracial and multiethnic individuals, of the questions and discomfort, that their racial ambiguity can cause in others. Dr. Ellis-Wiggan has facilitated Cultural and Linguistic Competency trainings at the community level when she served as the Clinical Director with the Burlington, New Jersey System of Care and at the national level.

Addressing questions that have arisen locally, the panel will discuss their experiences – their concerns as well as successes – in both growing up in biracial or multiethnic families as well as supporting youth in those families today. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions on the registration form and submit additional questions in confidence throughout the day.

Building on the morning’s panel discussion, afternoon workgroups will be formed around four resource questions (see #3 Learning Objective below). It is hoped that this forum will serve as a foundation to building ongoing conversations and resources to support biracial and multiethnic families on the Shore.

Participants in this forum can expect to:
Increase confidence in approaching cross-cultural issues respectfully and effectively
Improve communication skills in addressing issues of importance in cross-racial and cross-ethnic conversations.
Learn effective approaches to building better relationships between biological and foster families in cross-cultural settings
Participate in building a sense of community among attendees around cross-cultural concerns to reduce the feelings of isolation among families and youth facing these issues.
Contribute to and learn from discussion around building resources in the region to support cross-cultural understanding. Participants will work in one of four resource development areas:
Building the foundation for a cross-cultural exchange where families with questions about other ethnicities can find both open and knowledgeable people as well as written resources to answer their questions
Bringing together “tips for success” from discussion about what participants have found helpful in addressing racial and ethnic questions
Constructing a “cultural checklist” that would help guide parents and family caregivers, foster parents, professionals, and others in discussing issues of importance pertaining to race, ethnicity and culture
Constructing a “cultural checklist” that would help guide youth in discussing issues of importance pertaining to race, ethnicity and culture.

Several “seats” at this training will be set aside for foster parents and a group of youth under age 24. On the registration page, you will be asked to indicate whether you are a foster parent, youth, or other community member. Please answer by choosing the group with which you most highly identify yourself. You will then be automatically registered to fill these reserved “seats” on a first-come, first-served basis. ONLY Certificates of Attendance will be offered for this training.

One hour will be provided for lunch “on your own.”

Their names are Amelia Beatrice, Daphne and Tabitha. They were brought to Talbot Humane with their brothers and mother because the owner developed rabbit allergies. They are all very affectionate and are only 5 months old. The adoption fee is $65- the cost of having themspayed or neutered. Bunnies can live to be 12 years old when properly cared for and we encourage them as house rabbits. They can be litter trained and thrive with a varied diet which should include fresh veggies on a regular basis. They should be handled and receive out of cage exercise daily. Bunnies make wonderful family pets.

Despite the intended use of the products, it is, unfortunately, legal in Talbot County to sell mind-altering herbal and chemical products and paraphernalia to our youth and adults. Paraphernalia is the equipment, product, or material that is modified for making, using, or concealing drugs, most notably cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and most recently K2/Spice.

K2/Spice is a psychoactive herbal and chemical product that when consumed, mimics the effects of cannabis. Although often labeled as incense (and often labeled “not intended for human consumption”), those who sell and purchase these products are well-aware that they are intended for smoking, and ingestion, to produce a “high.” Parents need to be aware, that while K2/Spice is not illegal, it is a dangerous drug.

As states fight to ban synthetic marijuana, including efforts by our own delegates in Annapolis, users report having serious repercussions from ingesting the substance. Dangers include irregular heartbeat, seizures, increased blood pressure, loss of consciousness, vomiting, hallucinations, agitation, and dangerous behavior. K2/Spice has been linked to numerous deaths.

We ask Talbot County residents, especially parents, to be aware. If you enter a business that openly sells drug paraphernalia for use with these and other illegal drugs, be vocal. Let the business owner know you will no longer frequent their establishment as long as they continue to sell these products and that we do not appreciate their efforts of promoting products that are poisoning our community.
